Today, European standards constitute one of the pillars of the single European market.
European standards apply in all the 27 member states of the EU plus the three members of EFTA as well as Croatia and Turkey (in all countries which are affiliated to CENCEN
European Committee for Standardization, the European Committee for Standardization).
European standards play an important role for the lifting of technical barriers to trade. Whereas the movement of goods and services used to be governed, and sometimes impeded, by up to 28 different standards and legal regulations, it is today facilitated by European standards that may have made it possible in the first place.
At European level, standardization is governed by three organizations:
European Committee for Standardization/
Comité Européen de Normalisation
CENCEN
European Committee for Standardization is in charge of European standards in all areas other than electrical engineering and telecommunications.
