Standards and environmental matters

Environment and sustainability are of particular importance to standardization

At CENCEN
European Committee for Standardization
level, standards bodies deal with environmental issues thematically (e.g. air, water, soil, environmental management systems, eco-labelling or life cycle analysis). On the other hand, it is a general objective to review and optimize any standards project from an environmental point of view. Taking into account environmental aspects may lead to significant minimization of the environmental impact in particular of product standards. Instructions for implementation can be found in the CEN Guide 4 and are included as early as the first draft of a standard. The CENCEN
European Committee for Standardization
bodies below are available for assistance in implementation:

  • EHDEHD
    Environmental Helpdesk
    – the CENCEN
    European Committee for Standardization
    Environmental Helpdesk for Standardization

This helpdesk offers specialist support (analysis/implementation).
  • SABESABE
Strategic advisory board for the environment
    – Strategic Advisory Body on Environment

SABE is an advisory/coordinating body working at strategic level. Several specialist teams operate under SABE’s auspices.

For information on implementation and coordination at national level, please turn to the SNV Environmental Focal Point.
