International relations

As Switzerland’s national standardization organization, the SNV is embedded in international networks and thus represents the interests of the Swiss economy and society in global standardization. Our activities are legitimized by the Swiss Ordinance on the Notification of Technical Regulations and Standards and the Duties of the Swiss Association for Standardisation (Notification Ordinance, NO; Verordnung über die Notifikation technischer Vorschriften und Normen sowie die Aufgaben der Schweizerischen Normen-Vereinigung, Notifikationsverordnung, NV; SR 946.511) and the public-law agreement with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO. The SNV is a full member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

Swiss interests are represented in the ISO and CEN governing bodies by the following persons

Committed to the WTO Code of Good Practice

International standards promote global trade. The development and application of international standards are in line with the requirement of the World Trade Organization (WTO) not to maintain or create technical barriers to trade through national standards.

The recognized international, European and national standardization organizations have undertaken to comply with the WTO Code of Good Practice for the Preparation, Adoption and Application of Standards:

  • No preferential treatment for domestic products
  • No trade barriers caused by national standards
  • Adoption of relevant international standards
  • Participation of national delegations
  • Avoiding duplication of work
  • Building a national consensus
  • Coherence of the set of standards
  • Publication of work programmes
  • Public appeal procedure
  • Fair treatment of comments
