  • How can I influence standards?

When you create the standard, you drive the market

Switzerland is an exporting country. One foundation for this is the strong Swiss commitment to standardization. Active participation in the standardization process brings additional benefits when it comes to using the standards. Standardization is a strategic tool for management. It has top priority at all levels and is therefore not only a subject for specialists. In particular, highly innovative companies should constantly examine how they can use standardization for the marketability of their innovations, especially if they are striving for international market penetration. Experts from companies and organizations can participate in standardization in various ways. The type and degree of participation depends on the interests and available resources of the participants.

Decide your level of involvement

Your opinion on the standard

As Swiss expert, you have the opportunity to comment on national and European draft standards that are currently in the public survey phase. In the public survey, the draft standard developed by the members is published outside the competent standards committee for the first time, and is also available to specialists who are not members of a recognized standardization organization.

A current overview of the draft standards for comment can be found on the SWITEC draft standard portal.

Actively participate in shaping the Standards Community

Do not leave topics that are important to you to others, but proactively join in shaping them. Politicians are increasingly using standards to shape laws and regulations, particularly when it comes to specifying technical details and defining safety requirements. Participating in standardization is therefore key to the economic development of companies and organizations and is also crucial for representatives of universities and government offices.

Expert in the national standards committee

As an expert of a national standards committee, you actively participate in the shaping of national, European and international standards for a specific specialist topic. You have voting rights and enjoy the following benefits:

  • Contribution based on your own interests
Actively shape the technical content of standards and make contributions to the text of a standard based on your own interests and ideas. Help implement useful technology on the market, or discontinue the use of «undesirable» ones.
  • Keeping yourself up to date and exchanging information
By participating in standardization, you will come to know the content of the national, European and international standards in your specialist area before your competitors do. You receive information about worthwhile technologies at an early stage and can exchange ideas with other experts.
  • Security of investment
Early knowledge of the contents of the standards helps you to reduce the risk of poor investments. Standards of the recognized standardization organizations are always developed by the consensus of the members of a standards committee. Because various stakeholders are represented in a standards committee, the standard is subject to repeated critical assessment already in the process of formation.

Expert in CEN WG or ISO WG

Only those who know their market environment and continually monitor it, will notice emerging developments on the market and are able to initiate the right measures in good time. As a member of a national standards committee, you are flexible and can increase your involvement at any time, namely when it becomes important to you. You are able, for example, to actively participate in the development of a European or international standard by becoming a member of a CEN or ISO working group. It is also possible to participate in subjects that overlap with your chosen field at any time (for example energy efficiency, mobility or Industry 4.0).
