Standards documents for the European Tourism COVID-19 Safety Seal are available from the Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV)

Press release from 6 July 2021

The new European Tourism COVID-19 Safety Seal is an important tool in the process of reopening the tourism sector with the aim of building confidence in the industry. This safety seal can be obtained by tourism facilities that implement appropriate health and safety measures in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is the provider of this EU safety seal for tourism. Since 2 July 2021, interested parties from the Swiss tourism sector have also been able to purchase the standards documents from the Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV).

Just in time for the summer season, the European Tourism COVID-19 Safety Seal is arriving to improve safety procedures in tourism undertakings and to inspire greater confidence in European countries as safe destinations for travellers and tourists. The seal was defined in two CEN Workshop Agreements (CWAs). The documents, which are to be applied on a voluntary basis, were developed at the request of the European Commission:

  • CWA 5643-1 «Tourism and related services - Requirements and guidelines to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in the tourism industry»
CWA 5643-1 defines requirements and recommendations for tourism organisations. Their implementation is intended to contain the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen and protect staff from COVID-19. The objective is for service providers to be able to offer safe tourism services and products to tourists as well as the local population. This document applies to the entire tourism value chain, which includes the following 20 sub-sectors: accommodation, adventure and ecotourism, beaches, catering services, golf services, medical and wellness spas, the convention industry, museums and cultural sites, nature reserves, nightlife, recreational diving, ski resorts, and theme and amusement parks.
  • CWA 5643-2 «Tourism and related services - Requirements and guidelines to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in the tourism industry - European visual identity»
This document is free of charge and provides a label that is available to European tourism organisations in accordance with CWA 5643-1:2021. It defines requirements and guidelines associated with usage of the label. The document also contains informative annexes on implementation (such as a checklist) and references to national standards. In addition, it includes protocols and information intended for users from tourism organisations and related services.

Both documents are available in English in the online shop of the Swiss Association for Standardization.
