International Women’s Day: Why women are essential for standardization
Standardization committees are male dominated. As a result, women’s perspectives are rarely considered. However, while matters of gender are not necessarily relevant when it comes to screw threads, they certainly are when it comes to the standardization of menstrual products or determining standard weights for bags of cement. The requirements placed on standards must also correspond to the needs of the female population.

Martina Paul is a Senior Standardization Strategist at Huawei Switzerland and an active standards expert. In honour of International Women’s Day on 8 March, we asked her why she participates in the development of standards and why other women should get involved as well.
