The Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV) was again elected to the ISO Technical Management Board

Following a successful term of office from 2017 to 2019, Marcel Knecht, Head of Core Business at the Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV), was re-elected to the Technical Management Board of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TMB) on 14 September 2021. Marcel Knecht will represent the SNV and thus all of Swiss standardization on the ISO/TMB from 2022 to 2024. Switzerland may stand for election again at the end of this three-year period and serve another term.
The ISO/TMB is responsible for all technical work at ISO and, as such, supervises the technical committees and their work. This includes the following tasks, among others:
- Analysis of proposals for new technical fields of activity and technical committees
- Monitoring the work done by the technical committees
- Review of existing and possible future work of ISO and deciding on how to integrate it
- Monitoring the development of ISO Guides and other ISO documents
- Approval of the strategic business plans of the technical committees
- Resolution of technical coordination problems between technical committees
In addition, the ISO/TMB is responsible for any strategic advisory groups that deal with technical issues related to standardization.
In this election, two ISO/TMB seats were filled. Canada and Sweden competed alongside Switzerland. The SNV was elected by the ISO Council with its 20 members. Since both Canada and Sweden received an equal number of votes, they will have to face a second round of voting. A total of 15 standardization organizations are represented on the ISO/TMB, consisting of six permanent and nine alternating members. The six permanent organizations (DIN [Germany], BSI [United Kingdom], JISC [Japan], ANSI [USA], AFNOR [France], SAC [China]) hold this position because of their size and commitment to technical standardization work.
Following its election to the ISO/TMB, the Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV) is closer to the standardization process and directly involved in decision-making, which allows it to consolidate its international network. Both standardization work in Switzerland and Swiss experts will benefit from these advantages.
